Monumento ai Caduti

After numerous discussions since 1923, regarding the construction of a shrine or a park of remembrances, in 1932 the “pro monument” Committee was formed, which entrusted the design of a monument to the engineer Giancarlo Maroni, friend of Fulvio Balisti and famous for the creation of the Vittoriale di Gardone Riviera, the last home of Gabriele D’Annunzio.
The monument was officially solemnly inaugurated on October 20, 1935, after two years of work, in the presence of the authorities and the population.
The project of the monument was conceived by Maroni as a Shrine to be ascended, through a scenic staircase that originates in the center of four massive stone arched portals, over 6 meters high compared to the square’s altitude, placed on a stylobate raised by a few steps. .
The red stone staircase of Verona, in its highest part, in front of the circular “Terrazzo della Gloria”, is divided into two symmetrical and enveloping ramps with large cobbled steps, which lead to via Castello.
On the first large landing, in the center of the staircase, the “Pilo degli Eroi” was created, a monolithic block of stone on which the names of the Fallen are shown and from which a flagpole stands today in iron, but which was originally characterized by a fluted travertine element that included a fasces.
On the sides of the building there are two perfectly identical flower beds, surrounded by a perimeter wall in stone, low and curved and an iron guard rail, in the center of which a small Cedar of Lebanon has been planted, today almost 15 high. meters.
On the sides of the second section of the staircase, there is a degrading step characterized by two large laurel bushes, while on the top of the “Terrace of Glory” and in the green areas, Cypresses have been planted which, together with the other trees, constitute the park of Remembrance.
The complex was restored in 2009.
